I have a work 2018 mbp 15”. If I would use an 96w charger instead of the original 87w one, could I charge its battery faster? I don’t care about battery resource as an investment, I could reimburse such expense.

"Power adapters for Mac notebooks are available in 29W, 30W, 45W, 60W, 61W, 85W, 87W, and 96W varieties. You should use the appropriate wattage power adapter for your Mac notebook. You can use a compatible higher wattage power adapter without issue, but it won't make your computer charge faster or operate differently"

The answer appears to be no.

87w and 96w adapters are in same price, from this point 96w is better b/c it’s more universal. Any missed points?

If you needed to replace a 85w adapter, it would be sensible to buy the 96w instead.

If you had a working 85w adapter, it would not be sensible to replace it with a 96w one at this point because it would offer no benefit.

First of all, it should be 87W where I mention 85W since I mean USB-C chargers, and for 15"+

I checked Apple's Store. What I found 87W adapter is no longer available there.
If I check some other store, 87W is with 4-months Apple Music, and ... sold out.
So if would look for another USB-C adapter for 15" MBP, you have only 96W option.

As for you guess replace vs new. It should be rather one more adapter for fields trips.
In office I have a monitor with PD.
Original one will be always on my home desk.
And new one is to be in a backpack.

@nicho , you are right, there is no benefit. And there is no choice.
BTW new one should be heavier, a bit, but heavier anyway

I am using an adapter from MBP 15 on my MBP 13. Because this was the only option cheap/new on craigslist.
So the main benefit is that adapter doesn't get hot anytime, because it has higher ceiling and can feed my 13 inch laptop without even struggling. So it is warm at maximum, whereas old native adapter sometimes was hot.

It won't charge any faster, max current draw is dictated by sink device, and macbook will at most sink 87W.

It’s funny, I thought there was no benefit either, but I bought a 96w one anyway for my wife as a backup, thinking that when I finally upgrade, I could use it too with a 16”. The other day, the kids had been playing with her machine and ran it down to zero. She tried to revive it, to no avail, it wouldn’t even give the “plugged in” sound. Just dead. I decided what the hell, so I tried the 96w charger, and boom, immediately got the chime and the dead battery symbol. A couple minutes later, it rebooted. Hers originally came with a 67w charger. I figured maybe it was like when an iPhone runs all the way down, sometimes it needs a little boost with a higher powered charger to get going again.

Oops yep! I carried across the error without thinking :D

Essentially if you're in the market for one, there's no reason not to get the 96W - so if you want an extra charger, go for the 96W. But if you're not in the market for an extra one or a replacement, there's no reason to buy the 96W. You'd be spending money on something that offers no appreciable benefits.

As ever, just buy the one with the higher wattage. It would only make sense to settle for the lower ones IF Apple priced them differently, which is not the case.

I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro and I just got a 100 watt charger. It doesn’t charge faster, it appears. It is the Hyperjuice GaN charger, for anyone wondering.
