Use Apple TV As Backup

How could I set my Apple TV to be used as a back up device. For example I put some TV shows on it and when I deleted them from my computer they were removed from the Apple TV. Does anyone know a way I can do this easily?

What I am trying to do is free up some space from my MBP by using my Apple TV as an external hard drive. Does anyone have any experience with doing this?

You can only put media files on it from within iTunes, and then they get cryptic names such as "ST1X.MP4" for which you'd have no idea what it is unless you opened it up in QuickTime Player. You could not put, say, a disk image file on it or other non-media file. You cannot mount it as a remote hard drive unless you turn on ssh and activate AFP. These steps require removal of the drive, attaching it to a mac, then addition of the files to support ssh and AFP, then reassembly of the ATV. It also would only work with version 1.0 of the ATV software; Apple disabled ssh and AFP with the update.

If what you are trying to do is keep a TV show (or any media) that was synched to your aTV, it's easy: Just change the sync settings in iTunes to synch selected tv shows. When the next sync happens, iTunes will leave any unchecked media on the aTV.

The nature of synching is to have a master and slave -- in this case, iTunes is the master. When "sync all TV shows" is checked, iTunes makes its slave, aTV, reflect its environment. When you remove media from iTunes, it disappears from aTV. Changed the settings from "synch all" to "synch selected" breaks this master-slave mirror.
