iPhone 15 PM, iOS 18.3

I've disabled Apple Intelligence, now when connecting my phone to the car I get a message saying Siri is required to use CarPlay.

Since Siri has been folded into Apple Intelligence I can't find any way to enable Siri alone, nor set a specific permission to allow it just for CarPlay.

Are my CarPlay days over?

I have not ever enabled Apple Intelligence but use Siri on my iPhone.
I only use carPlay on my motorcycle but it's too wintery to go for a ride to test it here.
I might have toggled allow Siri when locked on for a few days but then back off now that I think about it.

Just turn AI back to enabled, and don’t use it. Most AI additional features you’ll won’t interact with. This is why 18.3 defaults with AI enabled. :)

That option is unavailable if Apple Intelligence is disabled.

Could it be that we have to turn on Apple Intelligence, turn on Siri, then turn off Apple Intelligence?

I turned on Apple Intelligence for a couple days, then turned it off. My "Talk to Siri" settings are still intact, with "Press Side Button for Siri" enabled. Listen for "Siri/Hey Siri" are set to Off.

CarPlay still works for me.

Hmm, that's not how it's working for me.

When I turn Apple Intelligence off, 'Talk & Type to Siri' changes to 'Talk to Siri’, and "old" Siri (with the orb) works. Do you have a screenshot of your settings?

Works for me this way
Finally figured out why my device wasn't allowing it like yours:

Under Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy Restrictions -> Intelligence & Siri -> Siri & Dictation was disabled.

Why Screen Time needs access to Siri is beyond me. I don't use Screen Time so I think I may have disabled some options in there after upgrading to iOS 18. I have yet to test CarPlay but my options under Apple Intelligence & Siri now mirror your screenshots.

Siri is needed to read you messages in CarPlay and or compose them. There is no harm in letting it run on CarPlay.
