I'm thinking about buying an 11" Macbook Air ($999) tomorrow! I'm at a loss though, should I use my work discount ($939) or student discount ($949 + $100 App gift card). I'm not a student but I still have my student ID from college. Plus I look like a kid, so if the rules at the Apple Store haven't changed I'm not concerned about not getting away with it.

My concern is that I have absolutely no use for the App Store gift card - I think. I have never purchased a song from iTunes nor paid for an app for my iPhone. Amazing right? What may I need from the App Store that makes the edu promotion worth it? How much is Word for example (I already have Office 2004)?

Anyways, I'm leaning towards squeezing 10 more dollars out by using my work discount (and it feels so mature too!), but I want the wisest advice. I also don't want to go through the hassle of trying to sell the gift card.

These are the quandaries of a parsimonious  fan. Thank you!

I'd say use educational discount since it costs only $10 extra. Basically you spend $10 to get a $100 app store card. I am in a similar situation like you.
I am in CA, so I am going with Amazon for my 13' i5 256gb.
Corporate discount: $ 1503+$130 tax :( =$1633
Student discount: $1666+ $100 app store card (incl tax)
Amazon: $1594 ( no tax)
I don't need the mac store gift card or the free printer!

If the money is a huge issue for you, then you can get the $100 gift card and sell it on craigslist for $50-$80 pretty easily.

Alternatively, the gift card can be used for downloading any applications. That means iTunes movies or music, or Apple store stuff... like OS X Lion for another computer... or Pages... or just about anything you can think of that's offered by Apple in software form. I think it might be good for ebooks too and stuff like that (I don't know if such things exist on the App store).

If you're a pirate, it can still be useful. There are some things that are useful that simply cannot be found for free on the internet. If you're not a pirate, then it's SUUUUPER useful.

I'd go for the $100 gift card. Money-wise you'll get more back if you sell it. And use-wise you'll get some nice apps out of it.

Thank you, thank you all so far.

I see exactly what you mean when you say I can sell it easily. Several of these cards are bidding at ~$85 on eBay. Maybe I can even sell it in the Apple Store, on the spot.

I saw that 4 years ago; a man in the Apple Store needed to buy a laptop. He wanted the student discount but obviously wasn't a student. A dad and daughter were visiting the store to buy an iPod touch. She was a college student but didn't need a computer. The strangers combined forces. The guy bought the laptop from the girl and got the discount, and the girl basically got a free iPod. I was amazed. The best part is the employees let the transaction happen, knowing exactly what they were doing. I guess it wasn't their place to judge the acquaintance between parties. LOL.
