So, here's the situation -

The time has come for my parents to upgrade to new phones, and since Sprint forced me to sell them back my Nexus S 4G (not a terrible device, but terrible as a phone) when I early upgraded to an iPhone 5 I don't have a back up phone I thought it might be a good idea to snag one of my parents old phones.

They are both using Samsung Replenishes, running Gingerbread. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on what use I could put such a low-end device to, besides just a backup phone.

Hmmm... Paper weight, gun practice, batting practice... That's not a knock at Android. I own an iPhone and a Nexus 7. I'm not brandist. Just that low end Androids are always SOOO excruciating to use. They've left a "bad taste in my mouth".

It really depends on what you would have a need for it to do. Android phones can do A LOT. Really just limited by the resources allotted to the OS and your imagination.

You can do whatever you want with them. Mess around with things like ROMs, kernels, tweaks, whatever...it's pretty fun actually. Just take a look at the HD2...4 year old device and it runs everything from Android to WM to W8.

That's what I was thinking, sorta just mess around with it and see what I can make it do. It's a pretty slow device - around the same speed or slower than a 3GS.

Please keep the suggestions coming, I really appreciate them!

Just as a note - I am NOT asking for recommendations on buying a device, just advice on what I can do with an existing device. This phone will only be a back up and mess around phone - not my daily driver. My iPhone does daily driver duty...

I did a quick google of the device and it seems like theres only a temp root for that device. That's the biggest problem. A full root with a lighter faster rom would go a long way.

Plenty of uses.

I had purchased a 80$ phone (4500 Rs in indian currency) and it is great for use as a 3G Hotspot. No need to buy mifi devices.

Although it is gingerbread, owing to 512 mb ram, the device rarely lags and is perfect for day to day apps. Forget heavy gaming though.

Ok. I took my old HTC Desire which was sitting in a drawer. I reformatted the SD card with an EXT4 partition which allowed the phone , which has only 140mb of memory, to use the SD card for apps etc. The phone can now use over 1GB. Then I installed Android 4.1.2 on it and gave it to my 10 year old.

It works great. he loves it (his first phone). Don't write off old(er) tech. It can be saved.
