I really wanted the new second generation iPod touch to include more iPhone features such as a camera, gps, offline maps, and microphone. Now that I know that that isn't happening, I am looking to buy a first generation iPhone and use it as an iPod touch, with extra features. Is there a way to get the older iPhone and use it without activating cellular service, but still be able to get WiFi access? Also, in the future, when my contract expires, will I be able to reactivate the phone, and use it with cell service? In other words, is this hack permanent?

Please give me some advice

You can fake the activation, either with an unlock or Jailbork (not sure which), then just not put a SIM in it, or you can use your SIM if you are on a GSM provider.

TEG

TEG I just bought a 3g and the guy at the apple store activated it and the SIM in my old iphone stopped working. I'm going to keep the old iphone incase I ever need a spare phone but while I'm not using it my sister wanted to use it as an ipod touch. Can she do this without incurring any costs? It has my old SIM in it but it just says no service. Should I leave it in there or throw it away?
