Everyone is aware that it is possible to use the iPhone as an internet tether. I can successfully use the internet when my iPhone is connected to my computer.

However, when I use internet tethering from my iPhone, it uses my carrier's internet connection rather than the wireless connection at my house.

Why does this occur? The phone is connected to the internet via wifi on my home router and can access the internet very quickly. However, when tether the internet with my Mac, the internet is dog slow because it's using Vodafone's internet connection over 3G.

Why is this the case? How can I fix it?

PS: I ask this because wireless is not working on my Mac - but ethernet is.

The iPhone cannot be connected to a Wi-Fi network at the same time the "Personal Hotspot" feature is enabled.

The feature is only designed to share a cellular data connection.

Why would one need to tether an already existing wifi connection? Am I missing something here?

I had the same problem, my PowerBook doesn't have an airport card, so I tried to use my iPhone to tether my wifi network to it. If you're willing to jailbreak, MyWi fixes this problem.

Why does this occur?

because you're trying to kludge together a solution to a problem that the good people in Cupertino had the smarts to realize didn't make sense.

you can get a decent USB wireless card for under $30.
