use iphone without AT&T

I want to get one of the 4gb iphones that are on sale for $299. however I can't pay for AT&T service as I already have a cell phone with my company that I can't get rid of. so my question is can you use the iphone without being on the AT&T network? I know obviously the phone won't work. but will the ipod stuff work? maps? stocks? I pretty much always have access to wifi so that isn't a big deal to me. Just wondering. If not I will be getting one of the new ipod touch.

Yeah and Ipod touch doesn't do everything. Like maps, stocks MAIL. so in relation to my first question can you actually use the iphone without paying AT&T each month?

No-ish. The only way to do it is to sign up for ATT, cancel ATT, pay $200~ ETF, then have wifi only iphone.

There are supposedly unlock solutions coming. Are you looking to use it with your current provider? If you are in the USA, your only other option to use it on a non-ATT network is T-Mobile.

Honestly, if you are only using the wifi, i would buy the ipod touch and wait for the inevitable hack to add google maps, mail, and stocks.

Plus, can't you create a google home page with the appropriate gadgets? Bookmark other sites like google maps, webmail and such...

I just ordered my 16GB Touch.

Yeah that is what I have decided. Now I have to decide whether to preorder the ipod touch now or wait for it in the apple store at the mall.

I give it 2 weeks and you will see a mod to install email on the iPod touch ... along with the NES emulator and all the other apps created for it.
