Use media keys when display is off

It would be useful to be able to use the media keys when the display is off. So then I could turn off the display and use the play/skip keys without turning the screen back on.

Are there any programs to add this functionality?

Even when you have used the F1 key to completely turn of the display backlight?

Yes that works but it leaves the display on, just turns the backlight off. I was wondering if there was an elegant solution for when the display is off (via ctrl + shift + eject/power). If not, I'll just do as you suggest.
