Use new Apple TV with a PC monitor?

I'm looking at getting a new monitor and I see that many now have an HDMI port. The first thing I thought was could I get the new Apple TV with HDMI and connect them. I see that the video would work but what about the sound?
No internal speakers on the monitor so what is a good solution for the sound part? Are there PC speakers that have optical inputs? What are you going to use?

You could buy a small 720/1080P TV for $350 bucks. That's a all in 1 solution.

And I can't give any links or quality suggestions, but yes there are some standalone speaker systems that have optical audio connections. One referenced here in the last few days was by Bose, although it was pretty pricey.

I bet if you google "powered speakers with optical audio input" you would find some things.
