Any benefit, other than price, to buying new? I am going to upgrade to a Hex 3.33, so I know the warranty will be at least compromised - so the warranty factor is lessened to an extent.

I'd argue that the main reason to buy new is to get the warranty (a case can be made that it is to avoid buying abused items).
If you're just going to void that anyway, then buy used.

New gives you a legal copy of Lion and iLife registered in your name. Also you get the new box experience.

Used referbs from Apple get a brown box but same warranty as new.

Used from somewhere else is only good if you get a great price. Otherwise you don't know how bad it is beat up.
