Hello,

My mother currently uses a lower end Android phone (Galaxy J5) as her only device. She has $0 budget for tech so I was thinking of getting her a used iPad Mini.

Due to a stroke, one of her hands is not 100% useable, but I think she will be able to handle a Mini. It’s possible I could attach it to an ergonomic arm.

I see the iPad Mini 1st gen can be had for about AU$100 but I doubt its ability to run the apps she needs.

Must-have apps are:
  • Facebook
  • Apple Music
  • Built in Photos app
Nice to have apps:
  • Skype
  • A simple piano keyboard app

Which model iPad do you think would suit?

Thank you!

When I read your title, for some reason it sounded like you wanted to trade a used iPad mini for your mother. I couldn't keep from smiling. I bet your mom is worth way more in trade. 😂😂

Hehe that is hilarious... Well that'll teach me for writing skimpy subject headings.

Bought a mini 2 on eBay so hopefully it will go well.

Atleast the mini 2, as that one gets iOS 12 and most apps are still compatible. Or the mini 3 if you want Touch ID. For best app support, consider the mini 4 (runs iPadOS)

Thank you. I got the iPad Mini 2 secondhand. It has iOS10 installed. Should I go ahead and upgrade to iOS12, or will it be too slow to be usable?

Works great...only issue is that the invitation that my cousin sent to my mother for Apple Music Family subscription doesn’t work...

I joined just fine, but when my mother clicks on the invitation link, iOS says: “Family Invitations: Select an invitation to continue.”

Beneath that is a completely blank box, no invitations at all.

I run my iPad mini2 also on iOS12.4.1 and soon 12.4.2 and still love it. I use it on a daily basis. I would love the update in the near future to an iPad mini4 / mini5 to be more future proof though but for now stick to it.
