I plan on buying an iPad to be a showing clients artwork in person and as a POS device. My laptop is nice but having something that anyone can understand and is completely rotatable is a big plus.
I don't want to spend too much money but 128GB is the minimum for storage capacity.

I figure the 12.9 is a bit much for hand holding so that is out of the picture.

For non heavy tasks but where the screen matters, would I be better off getting one of the smaller used Pros, Air, or just regular ole' iPad 8?

The 11-inch iPad Pro and/or the 10.9-inch Air will probably serve you well. They’re relatively light and slightly less heavy than the 8th gen iPad. They’re also all-screen which will allow the focus to be solely on your art rather than the thicker bezels / home button of the basic iPad.

That said, the 8th Gen iPad’s value considering it’s price is undeniable.

I’ve attached a screenshot from Apple’s website so you can check out the size/weight/dimensions, if that’s the main concern.

Also since you mentioned that the screen matters, it’s probably worth noting that the Air and Pro both have the P3 colour gamut (meaning that colours will be more accurate) and the 8th Gen iPad does not. They also have laminated displays so your content is closer to the surface of the iPad’s glass, rather than there being a small gap between that and the screen.

The iPad Pro has the high refresh rate which neither the Air or the regular iPad have. It’s not that important if you’re just showing off artworks, but if you do art directly on the iPad (with the Apple Pencil for example) it makes a big difference (to me at least).

My recommendation: The Air at least if you’re looking to buy new. Alternatively, if the price is right, a used 11-inch Pro from 2018 onwards. Maybe check Apple’s refurb store since some were reported to have been added recently.

If you're using it for hours at a time (e.g. reading), then yeah, it gets pretty heavy.

With that said, the 12.9" is what I bring into meetings. The 12.9" is roughly around letter-sized bond paper. The 10-11" iPads look ridiculously small next to letter-size printouts and the font on PDFs is too small to see for my older coworkers without zooming in by a lot.

This is the older style 12.9" with TouchID. As you can see, the display height in portrait is pretty much exactly the same as a modern US comic book and the actual display is noticeably smaller than letter-sized bond paper after you account for bezels.

Interesting, I had considered the 12.9 to be a bit much but after seeing that I think I might go that way.
Used First and Second Gen 12.9's float around the same price as a new 8th Gen so its in my price range. Thanks for that real world picture comparison!
