To an extent they're always nuts because nobody wants to take a hit on their used machine. The M4 MacBook Air with 16gb and 256gb new at $799 should dictate all other prices. Most of the machines available in the M series do what 85% of people who buy an Air would want to do so its understandable that people dont want to segregate prices out further. But I am seeing everybody trying to sell their machines for new M4 16gb prices.

Just an idea of what it should be for 13" units. 15" units are +$200:

NEW
M4 16gb at $799 <--- dictates other prices

USED
M3 16gb at $600
M2 16gb at $450
M1 16gb at $350

That seem right?

For some absurd reason people seem to have this idea in their heads that depreciation doesn’t apply to them when they’re selling their machine and they have some right to get the same price on a private sale that they bought it for 2 years ago. No idea where that logic comes from. Lots of people say “ah well it’s been kept in a case and in perfect condition” - well a new one will be in perfect condition! And it definitely won’t have a perfect condition battery. Some strange entitlement culture, I think. Your pricing suggestions seem far more reasonable.

Yeah. And at the same time I don't blame them for trying to get top dollar. But that breaks down at the point where the machine doesn't sell lol.

Think it depends on where you are and what the market demands. Prices are quite reasonable here in the UK.

Of course there are outliers but the general pricing is fine. Hell I bagged a mint in box 16Gb/512Gb M1 mini the other day for £180 for someone else.

Where are you looking at these prices? Are these actual selling prices or just what people are hoping to get?

Best way I know to track actual selling prices (not people's asking price) is to go to eBay and filter for "sold listings".

Anyway, yeah, Macs tend to hold their value pretty decently, especially these M-series ones that keep performing very nicely, even a few generations back.

I routinely look through FB marketplace, Craigslist, eBay (yes sold devices and unsold), and Swappa.

Right, but when you say "But I am seeing everybody trying to sell their machines for new M4 16gb prices" ... that's not just sellers being greedy, it's the actual market price that people are willing to pay. Wouild be kind of dumb to sell for anything less, yeah?

FWIW, seems crazy to me too, as you can often get a new one on sale (or a refurbished one from Apple) for not much more in many cases -- but apparently people will pay it.

The best use of a used MacBook is family and friends. If you can afford to pass it on to them for free, good for you. If you need to sell, see if they can pay you top dollar or give them a F&F discount.

When you sell outside your family/friends, they will have an incredible machine for cents on the dollar. But if you need the cash, that's the only option.

The M1 and M2 listed prices seem right.

M3 is a touch high because people who want to buy high end will just spring for M4.

my friend I wish the M3 price was high but thats so far from what people are asking for right now its comical.
