Used Mac Pro 4,1 (2x2.26) Price

I've come across what seems to be a legit 2009 Mac Pro 2x2.26 / 8GB RAM / 640GB HDD / GT120.

The person is asking under $1200. I've mainly been looking for used iMacs, but this machine definitely peaked my interest.

The only drawback I can find is the owner claims the 'handle' came loose toward the back of the machine and s/he seems to have used two bolts to keep it in place.

I'm a little skeptical after I was sent this pic. Not really sure how that 'handle' would come loose unless the owner dropped it. Is this common with Mac Pros?

Also, does this price seem right or a little too low?

Those are rivets, not bolts. I'd skip that one. I bought my 2010 quad for $1,500 - you can find better machines out there. Keep searching.

Looks like it came loose right after he dropped it off his desk.

On the plus side, this particular 2009 can be turned into a faster Mac than anything you can by from Apple right now.

Price seems a touch high for something with structural damage.

I had read that this machine could be upgraded w/ a firmware flash, new cpu's, and a new vid card. I'd probably add an SSD as well. If I just upgraded the vid card and added an SSD, I'd be in about $1600 but have a quick machine.

I'm weighing that against buying a refurb 27" iMac. I used to build PC's all the time, so I like the option of hardware upgrades. That's why I've been trying to find a decent used Mac Pro.

However, after reading both of your comments, it seems like you had the same concerns I did. Why the hell would they have to rivet the handle back on? How in the world did it come loose?

I really do mean that this thing was dropped or fell.

The top surface of handle should be a straight line. It is bent. So machine received a hard enough blow to bend the handle and separate it from the chassis.

I was able to turn my 8x2.26 into a 12x3.33 but it wasn't easy or cheap.

On the other hand, you could spend $5K at the Apple store to buy top of the line Mac Pro and end up with a SLOWER machine.

Do NOT buy that machine. The impact that caused that much damage to the exterior almost certainly caused damage to the interior. I.E. Motherboard etc.

Hi Reverendrun. I would avoid buying this Mac Pro as you don't know its history on how it fell and may have affected the interior parts. The 2.26ghz 4,1 Mac Pro is very common and many of this model are offered for sale in eBay or Craigslist. I know we want the lowest deals but sometimes in spending less we may end up spending more later on as problems surface. Just continue finding good deals. This model usually sells for $1400 to $1600 depending on the specs. There was a 2.26ghz I saw in eBay that was Mint, like new condition with 24g ram, 2 1TBs HDs with a Radeon 5870 that got sold for $1800. Just to give you a ballpark figure.

Going from a 2009 single-quad is much more cost effective compared from going dual to another dual set up.. Yes, that would be quite expensive.

Looks like you have a small scratch! Years ago this is the condition in which I received a G5 2.0 dual! After contacting the company (with photos) the G5 ended up being free of charge! Since it was free I fixed the damage and all was fine. I agree on passing on that particular 2009. The rear of that MP may look like this!

The handle is loose in addition to the pci slots being out of line.
