My co-worker and his wife are looking into getting a used MacBook any ideas on a good year to get for a used one?

From a reliability of keyboard standpoint - 2015 MBP is the newest I'd go on the used market, if they only need a MBA I think most are "safe" as I don't believe the troublesome butterfly keyboard was used in that line.

I don't know about the line that's named just "MacBook".

The 2018 and 2019 MacBook Airs both used the butterfly keyboard...

Depending upon computing needs and budget, a old version 2017 MBA or, even better, a new version 2020 MBA (with a “new and improved” keyboard, much better display, more modern CPU and graphics, etc.) could be the answer!

Mid-2012 Unibody! I have one and absolutely love it. Upgradable, affordable, and very reliable. With 8GB of RAM and an SSD this feels like a new computer, minus the thin and light design, of course.
