Hey guys, I'm going to go take a look at an MBA from someone off of craigslist. What do you guys think about buying used? What things should I look for?

Also, what would my warranty situation be like. Would I have to do any warranty transfer? Can I still get Apple Care if its under the other persons name?

Any advice is much appreciated :D

My 2c, doesn't seem like a good deal at all. Apple refurbished has it for $1529 so my max offer would be $1400. Anything more than that and makes more sense for me just to buy it from Apple.

I think OP may be in Canada?? That price looks familiar to me from my occasional snooping around on CL and Kijiji up here in Toronto.

Any way shawnjan, the warranty is attached to the computer not the owner, so it's not an issue as far as transferring.

you can not get any used MBA ultimate on ebay under $1600 , I think $1550 is decent price... you do pay tax on $1529 which is usually over $1600 !

Yep, Canada! But in Vancouver :)

So, I definitely should have mentioned that I'm Canadian in my first post because Canadian prices are higher. For the configuration I'd be getting from this guy, it would cost $2000 after tax, WITH my student discount.

I went to go take a look at it today, and the laptop is in perfect shape! I'm picking it all up tomorrow, for an extra $50 he is throwing in the ethernet adapter and external CD. I'm excited =D

Yeah you're basically saving tax on the computer. Refurb Ultimate is $1569. But with the extras that's not too bad.

Well, its saving the tax on top of the student discount... Basically my cap is $1600, so if I wanted an MBA, I would have had to opt for the 1.86 with 128GB if I didn't get it from this guy. So I'm happy :)

Glad OP got what he wanted but am confused by the logic from this post. You would rather pay 1550 for a used one vs ~1620 for one directly from Apple.

Penny wise, pound foolish.

Wise post here. :)

I just bought a refurb Ultimate from Apple. Full warranty & only $1636 with tax & free shipping. Call me foolish, but I'd rather have the security of knowing that I can go back to Apple in the next two weeks if I find a problem, PLUS refurbs are, IMO (and the informed opinion many other thoughtful folks out there) better tested/quality checked than regular retail new machines from Apple.

I have absolutely no qualms about buying refurbs straight from Apple. In fact I prefer them. Only thing I don't get is the pretty printed retail box to store away in my basement. :)

Well since he's from Canada, a refurb Ultimate from apple would be 1569 plus tax, which here in Ontario puts the total cost to 1780. (stupid 13% HST)

I just ordered last night and with selling my MBP I get to pocket some of the remaining money :)

Just the fact that its from Apple doesn't bother me that it is a refurb. I hear lots of great things from Apple refurbs, so hopefully my first one doesn't dissappoint.
