Apple acknowledged severe shortcoming of the iPadOS which is still less capable than System 7.5 from 1998. It still doesn't have a proper desktop or a Finder, but got a bit more multiwindow management and ability to create color folders. Lets see how it progresses further.

what’s more laughable is they focused a lot on multi tasking stuff but if you listen music or any stream in the background and you dare to play another video on safari it will still stop your background music. Even Windows 95 was better than this in that department and this alone kill the purpose of « multitasking ».

I treat that as a feature to know when an app or website is trying to play silent audio in the background (glares at the reddit app). 😬

Fixed SOME shortcomings but left most untouched. Fixed for you.

you can investigate it yourself. There is a whole thread about why iPad is not a replacement for Mac. A lot of interesting things there, really :)
while I have probably participated in that - you can investigate that yourself 🤓 - and the thread “is” continuing, a lot has apparently changed as of yesterday putting a lot of things mentioned in said thread (or others) into the past.
And if you would have followed the thread you referenced, you might have been able to understand that the answer to »why iPad is not a replacement for Mac« is not binary… as so many other things in the real world. 🤓 but hey, said thread has - as of this moment - 7839 comments, so please take your time. 🙂

There is a LOT to like here.

Using the keyboard, a couple times I forgot it was an iPad I was using and was surprised it wouldn't do something, which sort of pissed me off, and highlights the old saying, "it's always something" ;)

To me, this is a fantastic step in the right direction. It’s a full-throated acknowledgement from Apple that iPadOS is separate from iOS. And yet, they didn’t just port MacOS onto a tablet. I think they have finally found the right balance of mobile and desktop OS design that will drive a lot of road warriors to an iPad over a laptop. Apple seems to have embraced the business users and built something more than a media consumption device.

For what I've tested and maybe I'm just dumb, but it seems I can't make my games full screen when connected to an external monitor, witch is a little odd and again, not very computer-like class when on an external monitor.

Sounds like something worth reporting in the feedback app

Agree. I hope there’s no mandatory requirements for iPhone and Mac to have same version with iPadOS 26 to make them work seamlessly. I will update my iPad first and still wait and see before updating my Mac and iPhone.

They finally made the iPad more versatile, Mac-style. The new improvements don't bother me at all.

I’m really pleased - this all feels like a massive step forwards, including menu bars, better pointer interaction, better files app, preview and much better window management. Breathing new life into my iPad Pro.
yes, a small step in right direction, hopefully they will do more improvements in future

I absolutely LOVE IPad OS 26 on the 13 inch IPad Pro. I can’t remember the last time I felt this happy about an OS update. It’s a bit laggy at times and I’ve experienced some minor bugs, but that’s to be expected from a developer beta.

The OS update feels like a bigger update than upgrading from my old iPad Pro to the current version. The iPad Pro is now almost the perfect device for what I use it for. Light productivity, media consumption and most things I’d otherwise do on my phone when I’m at home (browsing, social media, messaging, emails etc.). Some third party apps are still a bit lacking but with the new update, I’m sure more developers will spend resources on developing IPad OS versions of their apps (I can’t believe Instagram still makes you use a scaled up version of the iOS app on iPad lol).

  • What about the files application doesn't work for browsing and copying files for you?
  • What about the macOS desktop do you need to do your job?
System 7.5 from 1998 couldn't even open MP3 files without a third party app, could barely browse the internet, had no concept of app security, one app could take down the system, etc.

System 7.5 sucked, Apple nearly went broke because it sucked so bad compared to the alternatives on the market by 1998. System 7.x was great in the early 90s. By 98 it was way behind.

Exactly. But this guy seems to have a chip on his shoulder against iPad for some reason. He makes threads like this every year, and goes to other iPad threads to trash on the iPad. As I told him before, since he seems to love System 7.5 so much, he should just use that while we continue to be productive on iPadOS… And I don’t think there’s really much substantive difference in functionality between the iPadOS Home Screen and macOS Desktop UI elements. Both can house files and folders (several different widgets and simple Siri Shortcuts for these on iPadOS Home Screen), apps, widgets, etc. There’s effectively not a difference in functionality between them anymore. Though Home Screen actually has an advantage in that it supports a multipage layout, something the Desktop UI paradigm doesn’t really have. As to file management, there’s seriously no major differences in functionality for the vast majority of people, especially with iPadOS 26.

Yeah a lot of people forget the crap we used to put up with. loading times, app crashes, OS crashes, crappy multitasking, etc.

I have a place in my heart for the amiga, it was my first serious computer and was amazing for its time. better multitasking than the mac, could emulate macOS faster than a real mac when it was released.

But fire up a copy of workbench today and it is extremely limited and missing things we take for granted.

like... network access for example.
