I have an iPhone 1.1.2 OOTB UK. I have jailbreaked and activated it so that I can use a non-iPhone sim on my own O2 contract in the UK.

On friday I will be going to france for a week.:p

I was wondering whether anybody has had any experience with using their iPhone abroad using the non iPhone O2 sim.

Any information would be greatly appreciated as the last thing I want is to cross the chunnel and end up with a useless iPhone. Especially as I'll be driving there with an N95 8GB user, there's alot of one-up-manship there.

Thanks in advance.

I have used my iPhone (bought one month after introduction in the US) all over Europe and the UK for several trips over the past 5 months, and have used my sim cards, (US ATT, US-T-mobile, T-mobile UK, Orange-FR) both before and after its introduction in Britain and France. In addition I have used my US and UK cards in NL, BE, DE, and CH where i do not have sims. It all works fine. You just pop in the new sims and go.

However, jailbreaking the phone will not do it for you. You will need to SimUnlock your phone to use another Sim card other than the ones from companies authorized, e.g., O2 in the UK, ATT in the US. You can find information on simunlocking in these forums. Alternatively, you can roam with the UK sim in Europe on your iPhone just like you can with an N95.... and at the same rates.

Used mine fine in China (China Mobile pre-pay SIM) and Hong Kong (CSL pre-pay) as well as Germany (United Mobile international SIM) and now the UK (Virgin contract SIM) without a hitch. But yes, you need to make sure it's SIM unlocked prior to dropping in your relevant SIM.

I'm going to Paris on Thursday. Am not planning on swapping sims. My previous phones with this sim have all worked abroad so assumed iphone will. Am I wrong???
