iPad Pro Using 60Hz Refresh Rate on a 120Hz Refresh Rate iPad Pro ?

Hi Guys,

I have a question I am thinking about using an External Monitor with the iPad Pro 11" that I have. I wanted to ask you guys Since the iPad Pro has a 120Hz Refresh Rate. Does the Monitor also need to have a 120Hz refresh Rate ? What will happen if the Monitor is only say 60Hz refresh rate ? will it create any problem ?

The lower refresh rate on an external monitor is no problem. The refresh rate will be limited by the USB-C output. I think that the refresh rate will always be limited to 30hz. ... not sure on that, but thats what it looks like from the “TV and Video” tech specs on the Apple product page for the new iPad Pro

So if I understand what you are saying is it doesnt matter what the refresh rate of the Monitor is, it will be limited to 30Hz do you know why ? is it mentioned that way on the specs of iPad Pro ? Can you pls post the link that you are taking about ?

Yeah, I actually first typed that I thought the limit was 60hz but after looking at Apple’s website, changed my guess to 30hz. Here’s the spec sheet: https://www.apple.com/ipad-pro/specs/

Scroll down to the “TV and Video” section and it only mentions supporting 30hz video for some reason.

I am pretty certain that 4k external is limited to 30hz, but I would love to be proven wrong for lower resolutions, especially if anyone has actual experience showing refresh rates for different resolution external monitors.

Ok, I have some more questions so accoording to this Apple link above it says,

iPad Pro uses the DisplayPort protocol to support connections to USB-C displays with resolutions up to 5K."

Now what does his mean ? I believe iPad Pro cannot play Videos in YouTube more than 1080P right ? So what is this above statement that contradicts it ?

Can iPad Pro play 4K and 5K Content in the first place ? I am so confused !!

Does it mean that iPad Pro can play Movies from the TV APP and the Video APP (My Downloaded Movies in 4K or 5k ) But it cannot Play YouTube Videos more than 1080p because that is YouTube's Prerogative on how much scaling up do they allow on an iPad ?

Yes, you can play 4k video on iPad Pro in HDR, I'm not sure about 5k though. I watch YouTube videos in 4k HDR on my iPad Pro
