Hey, i am wondering how to use a Bluetooth enabled cell phone as a modem for a Macbook Pro. I know it can be done, a friend of mine did it, but he doesnt remember how. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not all that familiar with this, but you're phone (Treo?) has to

1) Have BlueTooth (obviously)
2) Be able to be used as a modem (some phones have this functionality for PCs only, some phones don't have this functionality at all.)

Just turn on BT for your phone and computer, see if the Mac picks it up, and then try to configure your phone to be used as a BT modem. What kind of phone do you have?

It would help if I knew which provider and phone you are using. Then we will get started.

as previous respondent noted, more info on your setup is needed.

alternatively, you can go to howardforums.com and go to the provider and phone type you have. the question will have been answered hundreds of times there.

cheers

I'm going to join this cuz I too would like to know how to do this. Course, I haven't been able to get my Macbook Pro to network with my cell phone, even though it is Bluetooth. My computer will give me a code, and then I enter it in my cellphone, and then I get an error saying the connection failed. Yet, I try using a wireless headset and it works. :shrugs:

My network, Sprint. My cell phone, LG (don't know specific model), supports Bluetooth. Looks....Blue. Touchpad.....pulls down, keys, quite small :(.

ok, i do not use either phone brand or carrier, but i do do this with a motorola e815 and verizon.

first off, doing so (tethering your laptop via phone) can be in violation of your contract. it may not be, but you might want to check. it may also run up massive data fees. if you dont have a data plan, use sparingly or not at all until you know how you will be charged. you could easily spend 100s to 1000s of dollar doing this.

for much better answers on the specifics of your phone and your service, see howardforums.com (they are the macrumors of mobile phones).

to set up a bluetooth modem on the mac is ridiculously easy. make sure your phone is discoverable, turn on mac bluetooth, select add bluetooth device, and pick the mobile phone option. it will let you know if it thinks your phone has modem capabilities. you might have to select a driver, but chances are the sprint pcs driver is the one you want. i am not sure if that is true as well for the treo.

you will then need to "call" your isp, which is your carrier in this case. on their webpage there will be directions for what to do from here. you will need a phone number or code to call, and a generic password.

if this works, great, and enjoy. if not, go to howardsforum.com

i really love the ability to do this and check mail from just about anywhere.

I have an Audiovox PPC-6700 Pocket PC with Sprint which has bluetooth and touts its ability to be used as a wireless data modem for laptops. I've been playing around for a few hours trying to get it to work with my MBP with no luck.

I can get the phone to establish a connection with the computer but whatever I do I can't get it to act as a modem. I think I need to resort to some online manuals on getting to the two to work together correctly.
