I'm quite surprised, pretty much no one mentions this, but yes...you can take off ear tips and use Pros like "regular" AirPods.

I got used to wear regular AirPods while I work, even if don't listen to music, I don't notice them and still can here what is going on around me.
Transparency mode on Pros tries to achieve this, but I can hear this white noise of no sound, when nothing is playing.
So I decided to use Pros without ear tips. Also, I'm not a big fan of in-ear headphones, so expected to use them this way before I bought them:)

Fit: Perfect. Basically, they feel like an improved version of regular AirPods, shape and shorter sticks allow for more secure and snug fit.

NC: It still works, maybe at 25% of full power with ear tips.
Outside, while I can still hear cars and engines, this “hummm” noise from tires disappears - basically imagine if you close window and outside noises become muted. I wouldn't use it for music, but it does improve listening of podcasts, better than cranking up volume.

Bad: without ear tips, Pros aren't aligned inside the charging case, so you need to push them inside while closing the top.

Q: Why would you buy Pros instead of AirPods 2, if you don’t use ear tips?
A: I have OG AirPods with a weak battery. AirPods Pro cost only 25% more than AirPods 2 with a charging case, but have superior fit, “street mode” nc, and ability to attach ear tips when needed.
