Has anyone here have any success using an external USB drive (2.5 or 1.8 small drives) thru a hub with the Air?

I know I could use a powered hub but I hate taking and messing about with additional power supplies when I travel.

does anyone know of a specific model HD that works with out needing to connect directly to the one USB port but thru the hub?

Dr Bott

After numerous experiments, I'm now using this set up, which works without an external power supply to the USB hub.

Dr Bott T3 USB Hub + Freecom Toughdrive.

This set up works great and I can use the Toughdrive + iPod + USB memory key simultaneously on the T3 hub. And the Toughdrive has the bonus of having it's USB cable built-in.

I'm sure this is to do with the Hub and not the brand of the Hard Drive. I'm pretty confident that the Dr Bott would also allow other portable drives to run eg. WD Passport.

in my experience, you will need a powered USB hub. I use a powered hub to sync my iphone with itunes, since 50% of my music is on my external HD (bus powered)

I have tried attaching a USB powered 160GB External hard drive to my MacBook Air through a non-powered hub, and it doesn't work (it doesn't even turn on). It seems like you will need a powered USB hub.
