All iPads Using an iPad and Apple Watch

Anyone using just an iPad and LTE Apple Watch? Maybe with AirPods? What has been your experience?

I’ve been testing this out with my first gen 12.9 pro with Apple’s Smart Keyboard and Pencil. Since this Watch makes and receives calls and Messages, I’ve left the phone at home. I also have AirPods which connect to both the Watch and iPad Pro for convenience.

Only thing I‘ve noticed is the iPad size is great when typing or viewing anything that the Watch can’t handle easily. Trade off is mobility compared to using the iPhone in the car or out and about. I feel there is too much overlapping with three devices and I’m looking for that happy medium. iPad Mini is interesting now that it supports the same Pencil I own and A12 chip running the current iPadOS too. Also, my Watch connected to my previous vehicle but not the new one. I thought I could connect it for calls and messages like the iPhone, but it’s not working. Not a deal breaker as I could keep one AirPod in my ear while I drive to answer calls. Messages can be replied back using Siri.

It’s a crazy world we live in and sometimes we are comfortable with the old norm but I know some of us push the tech to find new ways of computing. 😃

The problem is that you need the iPhone to set up and update the watch. So if you own the phone, it makes sense to use it in some way beyond being a watch tool. So your iPad-plus-watch model doesn’t really work. That said, it might appeal to some people if the watch became a standalone device not reliant on a phone — something that will likely happen sooner or later.

Even with an LTE watch, the cellular implementation requires having an iPhone turned on and connected to the network in order to get SMS or push notifications on the watch.

It’s still really unfeasible to use the watch witrout having an iPhone at all.
Also, as you’ve noticed, the Watch does not support the Bluetooth protocols required to connect to a car.

You still need to rely on the iPhone for many things.

Maybe the trial won’t work 100%. Just wanted to ask as I’ve been been watching many iPad as a computer videos😂

Been drifting towards that myself in the last weeks. Have an iPad Air 3 with the Smart Keyboard (and hook it up to an external Monitor for longer sittings), and try and use my S4 LTE for iPhone tasks as much as possible. Still grab my XR occasionally, mainly for tasks on apps that aren’t on iPad (WhatsApp, whichonly has a Webapps on iPad, few other local apps). still a tad too early for 100% as you say, but its a good path towards the future methinks.

Try leaving your phone turned on and connected to cellular, and see how you fare with just the watch and your iPad mini. It may work well for you. I am trying to do the same thing as much as I can, except with my iPad Pro 11, Apple Watch, and AirPods Pro.

yup, fine for around the house. As soon as I go out for more than exercise, I want my iPhone camera with me, so I take
