Using an iPad sat at a desk...

I've been considering shipping an iPad over to the UK for a while, and with the new pricing release, it makes it even more tempting (only looking for the wifi model). I have a 27" imac but i miss being able to take my macbook (which i sold) into my living room and just laze around on the sofa surfing the internet.

I'm a bit confused though as to how you use the ipad in everyday situations. When you're sitting at a desk or if its on your lap for example, how do you use the ipad? It doesn't seem right to have it sitting flat on its back on a desk or having to to use your knees to prop it up at the right viewing angle?

Apologies if I'm being ignorant.
 
Good question actually. I haven't figured out the perfect position. When on the couch I hold on one hand and type/touch with the other. I've tried it flat on the desk, didn't care for that. And as I hunt and peck keys as I type this post lying down, I find the iPad a tad heavy.
 
Buy a case that let's you prop it up at an angle. Helpful on flat surfaces and lap. Bought the apple case and i love it.
 
If you're at a desk, you could probably let it lie flat on the desk except when you want to change orientation between portrait and landscape, which requires picking it up briefly.

When using it on a lap or sofa, most often, I rest most of the weight on my leg or on the sofa while using my left hand to support the rest of the weight and control the angle, and my right hand for input.

well, someone got a 64GB shipped over for about £525ish with fast shipping, so with slower shipping I could bring the price down even more. I'd do it to save me almost £100.


It seems people tend to use one hand to support it whilst only typing with one hand. This seems a bit of a pain to me as I'm pretty sure most people can type 5 times faster with 2 hands. I just had a look at the ipad case and it looks like it would do a reasonable job propping it up whilst on your lap

I hold/read my iPad much like I would hold a magazine.
 
I believe that furniture will change because of the iPad. Soon, desks will all come with little slide-out trays that tilt downward at adjustable angles -- a natural progression considering the mouse is now officially dead. Mouse/keyboard trays have been around for a while, but now evolution is under way. Soon. Very soon.
