Using an iPad to review/delete photos from my DSLR

I currently put the SD card from my 5dm3 into my MacBook Pro and go through and delete photos before transferring them all to my iMac where I maintain my primary photo catalog. I'm thinking of getting a iPad to replace the MacBook Pro for the purpose of reviewing and deleting photos. I shoot .CR2 RAW.

1. How do you import your photos without them going into your primary Photos Library and uploaded into iCloud?
2. Is there lag when reviewing RAW photos in Photos?

3. How do you get the RAW files off the iPad and onto a Mac?

I wanted to do something similar with my Canon RAW files - not download them to my iPad Pro, just be able to use the iPad to review and cull them directly from the camera's card efficiently. I ended up with something of a workaround - instead of an SD card in my camera, I use a high-quality uSD card in an adapter. I can then use a Lightning-based uSD card reader to do what I want on the iPad. I posted a review of the one card reader I found that could do what I needed here:

1. So instead of using an SD card in the camera you are using a uSD card in an adapter?
2. You take the uSD card and put it into this device to review/delete your photos on the iPad before transferring them to a computer?
3. Why not just use the SD card and the SD dongle for the iPad to review the photos that way?

1) Yes
2) Yes, but I do this only if I am somewhere where I have taken only my iPad and not my laptop.
3) You only see thumbnails when using the dongle - no viewing option, just import to iPad (which I could do but often I have multiple GBs of images and I just want to be able to thumb through them full size to see how they are).

I just tried out everything with the iPad and the SD dongle.

1. I turned off WiFi on the iPad
2. I plugged the SD into the dongle and imported all of my .CR2 files into Photos
3. I reviewed and deleted the ones I didn't want
4. I connected the iPad to my Mac and used Image Capture to transfer my selected photos to the Mac
5. I deleted the .CR2 files from the iPad

This seemed to work OK, as long as I turn off WiFi it is not uploading the large .CR2 files to iCloud...
