using an iPhone without activation (like a better iPod Touch)

I am interested in purchasing an iPhone but cannot subscribe to the AT&T network yet. I would like to use the iPhone as a better iPod Touch. The sales person at Apple store said I could not do it.

Is there a reliable hack that will let me use the iPhone as an iTouch (WiFi only)? I mean the iPhone has an external volume control, camera, bluetooth, etc. the iPod touch lacks these.

I am new to this forum, I apologize if this has been discussed before. If so, could you please point me to the location of the thread?

theory sounds legit, however i am not sure the process of getting it to work like you want it to

How about a utility called iFuntastic? Will it allow an iPhone to be used w/o ATT activation, so it works like an iPod Touch?
