Using an Upgrade Version of XP.

Hi

I am planning on getting either an iMac or MacBook later this month and I want to be able to run Windows on it as well using boot camp. I have an upgrade version of Windows XP SP1 and I have created a slipstream of this to create a Windows XP SP2 CD. I also have the Windows 98 CD which is required for the upgrade.

I have a couple of questions. Is it possible to use an Upgrade version of Windows XP with boot camp? And if so is there anything I can do to be ready for when I buy a Mac.

Also I am hopefully starting University in October and I think I am able to get a free licence of Windows Vista because of the course I am doing. Will it be possible to upgrade XP to Vista at a later date on the Mac. I have done it on a PC but just wanted to make sure it is possible on the Mac.

You can't use an upgrade version of Windows as there is no way to eject the XP install disc to verify the Win98 disc. However, this thread may work for you.

Upgrades after you've installed botocamp (from XP to Vista) are possible from what I've read.

If you mean upgrade disc as an SP1 disc slipstreamed to SP2 then that will work.

You can do it with an upgrade copy of Vista. Simply use the upgrade disc when installing Windows for Boot Camp, don't put in your product key when prompted, launch the setup again from inside Windows once it boots for the first time, and this time insert your product key, and do a custom install. This will install Windows again and you will be able to activate it. It's completely legal, and it's listed as a possible way to install the Vista upgrade on Microsoft's site.
