My wife is not good with tech and tried to use Apple Pay for the first time in three different brick & mortar store today to try it out. One was a Dollar General, one a Stop N Go, and one a local mom & pop grocery store. We Live in a rural community and was in a different town when she did this as she’s in a nursing home. She has a power wheelchair so goes out on her own to different stores.

She had different experiences at each store trying to use Apple Pay on her iPhone 15 Set to Face ID.

1. At Dollar General it asked for her PIN number and she may have been putting in the wrong PIN but it wasn’t going through. Clerk bypassed the PIN for her and purchase went through.

2. At Stop N Go no issues the purchase went through no PIN required.

3. Last stop was local grocery store and it asked for her PIN again and they didn’t offer to bypass PIN. Her Debit card was compromised so this is replacement card with a new PIN. She called me while there and I told her to try her old & new PIN but neither worked. Guess she tried a few times so can’t try again until tomorrow.

Can someone explain to me what is happening since I’ve only used Apple Pay once myself? The PIN they are asking for is the bank PIN not Apple, correct? I don’t understand why either the old or new PIN wouldn’t work.

Are her experiences with some purchases requiring a PIN and others not, all about individual stores? If so why doesn’t the Face ID just bypass this?

When I first started using Apple Pay I had it linked to my bank debit card and it was about 50/50 whether it asked for a PIN or not (and yes, it was the bank PIN for the debit card). I now have it linked to my Apple Card as primary and have never once had it ask for a PIN.
