Using Apple TV both wired and wireless

Howdy all,

Just a quick question about using Apple TV over a wireless network. If I have a iMac plugged in via an ethernet as well as Apple TV running off my wireless router, will the stream of content from my iMac use the ethernet or will it still default back to the router when grabbing content?
 
I mean in terms of speed. Will I get the wired speed for streaming off the mac or the wireless?
 
I'll explain my set up a bit better so you can get an idea of what I'm asking.

My iMac is running wireless of my router, it's quite old so I don't think the wireless card is as good as the speed the router can handle or the apple tv, therefore streaming wirelessly off my mac would result in a decrease in speed compared to a wired stream.

My apple tv is currently connected to my router wirelessly and I wantto keep it that way as its the fastest possible method to download from the iTunes store.

What I want to do is connect my apple tv to my iMac and stream the local content through the wire, what I want to know is if I do that and the apple tv is wirelessly connected to the router, when I ask it for content from my mac will it know to do it through the wire or continue to grab it from the wireless network?
 
You can't connect the Apple TV directly to a Mac and stream that way, as far as I know at least. It has to go through some sort of network.

But if you want, you can try what you want to do by just not setting up the wireless on the AppleTV and connect the ethernet straight to your Mac.
 
Unless you're simultaneously streaming multiple HD videos from your iMac, you really shouldn't have any problems.
