Using AppleTV Offline

I have just ordered an AppleTV which should be arriving soon but what I would like to do is load it with movies purchased on the iTunes store then take it on holiday with me instead of taking loads of DVDs.

If I buy the movies on iTunes and sync the AppleTV, will I still be able to play the movies without an internet connection? When I had an AppleTV before, everything was DRM'd but not sure if the movies still are or not.

Of course, take 'em all with you. No need for internet once they are on there.

I was wondering this same thing. I really want to buy Apple TV but had to find out about this first.
That will be pretty cool to carry around one little "box" instead of tons of DVD cases!

If you buy/rent something from the Apple TV then sync your computer with the Apple TV, any media should get transfered to your library. So you can then watch it on the go without an internet connection (provided your computer has been authorized in iTunes to play back such media).

With rented movies, if you start to watch it on your Apple TV, get half way through and stop watching it, sync your computer with the Apple TV again to continue to watch it where you left off while on the go. Don't forget that you only have 24 hours to watch a rental, then its automatically deleted from your Apple TV and library

When ever I've used Apple TV offline only ripped content works. For iTunes bought content it say it couldn't be authorized to play.

If movie/song is not on ATV's hard drive, then yes iTunes has to be on. But it doesn't have to as long as the media you want has been synced to the ATV hard drive.

You can do what I have done and choose to sync with iTunes, but actually not transfer anything to the Apple TV's hard disk, instead stream all the media over your network connection, be it cabled or WiFi.

There is no way however to buy from the Apple TV and it not touch the Apple TV hard drive. You would purchase your media from your computer as normal. You can then either when you get back choose to stream it to the Apple TV or sync it to the Apple TV's hard drive at a later date

That's right, you do not necessarily need to sync content to your TV's hard drive to view it -- once you establish the connection between the TV and iTunes on your computer you can watch the content by wireless streaming. In order to do this, though, you have to have your computer on with iTunes running and both your computer and your TV have to be able to communicate with each other through your network (or wired connection).
