Can you use EL Captain on todays web, such as watching you tube, Netflix, Amazon Prime? I know my iMac with Lion was very limited?

yes my main home machine is a 2007 iMac running el cap as cannot natively run Sierra/ High Sierra.

no issues at all use it every day after work and at weekends.

mainly on youtube streaming festivals and facebook.

also play blitz world of tanks sometimes.

I use Mavericks on my iMac and mostly everything still works fine (except for anydesk for some reason), you'll be fine on El Captain!

What year or model I should buy 2010 or 2011? I read the 2011 had Logic board troubles?

You would want to avoid 2011 MacBook Pro 15" and 17" models, because of "RadeonGate" ...

I found a nice 2010 model with High Sierra, hopefully it will do want I want

I have a 2007 20" iMac myself

it does all I want.
But I am going to upgrade a few bits so it will run high Sierra.

these old iMac I feel are quite under rated machines.
Bought a 2008 for a friend who is in love, it's also his first ever Mac!

I thought the highest OS was El Captain?

native yes but with right cpu (some are ok out box, other need upgrade) and patcher it runs fine.

I patched a friends 2008 iMac and he loves Sierra.

just need swap out wifi card as original not Sierra compatible.
I have a 2.0GHz which is not compatible, I bought a 2.8GHz to upgrade it (CPU not soldered)

I also maxed out to 6GB ram, SSD and CPU upgrade soon.

I reloaded El Captain on my MBP, it seems to work pretty good, better than High Sierra

There are no issues as long the software (browsers etc) and are supported, which they will be for a quite long time.
