Using existing Time Machine drive for new Macbook Air

I setup my new 2020 Macbook Air from a Time Machine backup - can I continue to use the same drive for this new machine? Do I just start backups to the same drive or will it erase the existing backup?

When TM runs it should ask if you want to inherit the backup already on the drive, say yes.
