I have a 2012 iMac that had a spinning drive and I upgraded to using an external USB 3 SSD as the boot drive. It made a big difference and works for me. I am now moving to another country and need to ship my stuff, which will take a few weeks so I will be without my iMac for a while. If I buy a MacBook Air, can i plug the external boot drive into it and just keep using the Air as my main system as if nothing has changed? Once my iMac arrives at my new home, can I then just plug that external drive back into the iMac and carry on? I assume it just works fine, but would this screw anything up (system files or settings?) by using the same external boot drive on different macs? I won't be doing this often, but I was wondering if this is a viable short term fix for my situation so I have access to my full iMac system while it ships. Many thanks for any advice.
