Hey all. I have decided that I want to use my gigabit ethernet G4 as a file server. Here are the things I want to do on it ...

  • I want to be able to control it from my powerbook since I have that hooked to my monitor
  • I want to be able to access my drives on the powerbook easliy
  • I want to be able to use the DVD-RW dirve in the G4 tower from my powerbook
  • I want to be able to access my iTunes anywhere (even at work on my peecee there)

What can I use to be able to do these things. I really appreciate all your help :)

Anyone got any advice on this one?? I don't need an answer to all the questions at once but just taking them one at a time will do. I was going to get started on this little project later tonight when I get home from work. Thanks :)

For the first one you can go with VNC for the remote display. Will be easy to access your PowerBook's drives through sharing. I'll leave the other's for someone else.

iTunes from home.

Have fun ... *btw- an Airport express is a nice way to let your PB see the fileserver ... doubly nice if you've got an optical in on your home stereo. ;) ... though if your going Gigabit you'll have to be tethered. :( unless you get a Gigabit router, but then you lose bandwidth over Aiport so it won't matter much ... you G3 only has 10/100. i assume your laptops are wireless.

What is this VNC thing... does it let you control the computer from another computer? Is it just file sharing or what I'm confused. Thanks for the help in advance I'm new to this thing.
