using generic fbdimms to upgrade

Hi all,

Im doing a major overhaul of one of our mac pro 1.1's and was wondering on memory. Upgrading to 32gb its max, and wondered if it was possible to use server 5300f ecc registered memory from a dell or hp server in there.

Same timings snd fbdimm, just not apple and a hell of alot cheaper.... Any ideas or suggeztions?

Many other have used generic RAM successfully.

sure, go ahead. we maxed out our 1,1 and 3,1 with every brand, that came along. still expensive, though.

FYI, the R-DIMM is not compatible with the FB-DIMM as can be seen here. What you need is Dual Rank FB-DIMM, not even the Quad Rank FB-DIMM would work.

Ok to sum up.

As long as im using PC2-5300f FB-Dimm with heatsinks then im all good to go with this as? Anything other than this format will not work.

Wont be expensive for me to carry out in this format as ive got a couple of Dell poweredge Servers that im pulling apart which carries this memory and has the capacity I need.

You might encounter issues when the RAM is heavily stressed, and/or your Mac Pro will run louder then normal.

There is a reason why Apple included larger then normal heat-sinks on their FBDIMM RAM. That reason was to keep the system quiet and keep the memory adequately cool without excessive airflow over the FBDIMMs.

Should be fine as long as they have the large heatsinks and not just heat spreaders (flat metal plate type heatsink).

Though even with the wrong type it should be ok most of the time, though expect the fans for cooling the RAM to run faster and for the occasional heat related hard shutdown if you stress the system.
