i'm considering buying a HD projector for my room to use with my imac for watching movies and for my xbox. does anyone know how i'd go about connecting it all together?

It depends on what projector you get and what inputs it has. If it has HDMI, connect the computer via HDMI, etc.

Figure out what projector you want, find out what inputs it has, get the necessary adapters for your iMac.

What is the best way to connect a projector to my iMac.
The projector has HDMI port, component video , RS-232 ports, PC audio in, Composite video in, S-video in, VGA ( D-Sub) ports quality and USB 2.0 ports quality
And which adapters will I need.
The projector will be about 40 feet from the iMac.
I'm a real novice in need of help

Get a Displayport to HDMI adapter and simply run a long HDMI cable (I'd recommend monoprice.com). Depending on the length of the run, you may need an HDMI repeater to strengthen the signal, which can degrade over longer runs.

Overall, it should be a simple setup. You're probably looking at sub $100 for everything.

40' is a long HDMI run. Component would be Ok. I have a couple of 25' hdmi premium cable runs from monoprice and they don't need repeaters.

You also need to run something for the audio. Others may want to chime in but i'm not sure the MDP to HDMI converters from the imac will carry the audio over HDMI. There are only so many MDP converters so i would focus on that piece first and then focus on the downstream cable requirements...btw, many of these are flaky connectors...read up before committing.

I spent some time thinking about this and just decided to add an apple tv to the mix. I stream from my imac to apple tv, hdmi out to my Denon 4310 that HDMI switches between my projector or lcd.

My plan B was just to nut up for a dedicated HTPC and forget the imac integration.
