Hi all,

With my trusty Windows PC now 6 years old I am looking at replacing this with an iPad Pro as I feel this will do everything (and more) I would need from a laptop.

My question relates to storage and backup of my documents, music and video files and so on.

With my laptop I would use an external hard drive to create a backup copy of these files.

I understand the main purpose of iCloud Drive is to access your documents from any device, but would this also act as a method of creating a safe copy of my files? If not, is there an alternative way of doing this?

Thanks a lot

It is and isn't a backup solution.

It is in the sense that, if your iPad is somehow broken then the files will not be gone.

It is not, in the sense you have nothing to "revert to". If you delete a document by accident, it is gone. If changes are made on the iPad they will be replicated in the cloud and vice versa. It's both good and bad depending on what exactly you want.

not meaning to 'hijack' the thread but Phil's speech sold us on ditching a very slow W7 Sony laptop and seeing if we can use a new iPad Pro 9.7 32GB
So far so very good! especially with the ASK.
We have gone for the 32GB because of the insane cost of ASK etc
Please can I ask about keeping data in the cloud to save on the Pro's 32GB. How does that work? We have 50GB of iCloud storage, is this the same as icloud Drive?
Please can I as how is the best way to get mp3 off our old laptop into the cloud and then stream from the music app? again to save storage.
Thanks in advance.

i don't think you can do this though icloud drive; it would require either a subscription to itunes match or apple music and going down that route.
