Using iCloud for Select Documents

I am quite hesitant to use iCloud. When it first came out it wanted to take everything on my computer, copy it to the cloud, and if I wanted to delete anything from the Cloud it would delete it from my computer as well.

Is the new iCloud any different? I want to take around 6 specific documents - from the hundreds I have - from my computer and copy them to my mobile devices. I want to be able to send them via email from the mobile device without having to wait until I get to my computer. I do not want all of my documents in the Cloud - only a handful.

I may want to either edit one of those documents on the mobile device (adding info to a PDF or tweaking a document as a newer version) and use the handoff/continuity to continue the work on the computer if necessary. I do not want to lose the original version.

I have Pages on my computer as well as my iPad Air, and iPhone 5s - each with IOS 8.

Can I use the iCloud drive in just this limited way? If so, can someone educate me on the specific steps.

Maybe, but if you just want to be able to send a few docs between your devices and not store them in the cloud then DeskConnect may be more suited for you...

It may be that there are many products out there I can use. I think I can use dropbox. My question regarded iCloud and the way it works or doesn't work as the case may be.

Sure... that is exactly what iCloud Drive is for. Just put the few documents you want to handle in this way in iCloud Drive and they will be synced across devices.

Only thing is if you want to keep the original unedited, you will want to keep one copy of that file outside of iCloud Drive... like perhaps in your Documents folder.

Sure... that is exactly what iCloud Drive is for. Just put the few documents you want to handle in this way in iCloud Drive and they will be synced across devices.

When you install Yosemite and enable iCloud Drive all it does is take documents etc. you had in the old iCloud and move them to the new iCloud Drive. It does not move anything from Documents to iCloud Drive.

Any copy left in Documents will be untouched by anything you do with the copy in iCloud Drive.
