Using iDisk to backup files

If I had a file in the Documents folder called 123.txt and wanted iDisk to backup the file should I expect when I make changes to that file that iDisk will back it up or will I have to make the changes to that file in iDisk?

Your Documents and iDisk folders are different.

You need to put the updated document in the iDisk folders for it to sync with the cloud.

Your iDisk has a sub folder/Documents folder (not to be confused with your local Documents folder). If you use your iDisk / Documents folder to keep your file in, then yes, changes will be saved.

NOTE - You might want to drag the file to your desktop to work on it (make changes) then move it back to your iDisk if the program you are using has some sort of auto-save file feature turned on (where a separate file is created for backup) such as MS-word or text edit. These auto-save files can cause problems with iDisk.

Given the poor performance of iDisk, I'd look at other solutions before using that as a backup. I tried from time to time, and every single attempt was met with frustration as it took all day to move a small amount of data to my idisk.

Wow, I haven't had any of those problems since 2003. I keep 3 Mac's and my iPhone in sync perfectly. iDisk of course isn't my only backup solution, I have many others...

I actually did a Cmd+shift+4 and saved that post for later. Thanks for posting it.

Given that I"m at 50% of my Dropbox storage, I'm going to try your solution for syncing documents I don't need synced right away. Because iDisk takes her sweet time syncing with the cloud. Even when I do a manual "sync now" via the menu bar, stuff still won't show up for a while.

Just like the saying goes "A watched pot of water never boils" (or what ever it is...) as long as files do eventually sync to your iDisk I don't see what the hurry is...

The main point is - Do you trust files to sync to your iDisk. Mine do
