I will be purchasing a 15" powerbook soon and am deciding whether or not to get one with the superdrive. Since i have plenty of access to desktop G4's at work that have superdrives I was wondering if it is possible to create the DVD-to-be on a combo drive outfitted machine using iDVD, then connect to the desktop via firewire target mode and burn the DVD using the desktop's drive. Any experience with this sort of arrangement? Or will iDVD refuse to launch unless you have the hardware to burn DVDs installed? Thanks.

As far as I know, answer is no. iDVD works only on internal drives.
However, Toast 6 has this feature to utilize remote burner.

with the latest idvd patch you can open idvd and create movies, then take them to a computer with a superdrive.
