I'm looking to get a new iMac to keep all of my music, pictures, videos, school files etc. My MBP is old and slowing down, but I'm hoping to completely whipe it so its at least like a "netbook equivalent". Is it going to be possible to access all of the files on my iMac, from the laptop? Like listen to my entire music library, watch movies from my laptop, streaming over the internet from my iMac?

In short, yes. I stream all my audio and video across my wireless n network without a problem. You can link itunes on your laptop to the files on your imac. Works fine.

Even if the imac and laptop are at two totally different locations on different wifi networks? And is there also a way to access other files on the imac from the laptops such as a powerpoint or word doc?
