I have a friend who is residing in the UK. I want to send him messages using iMessage without any charges but sometimes its important to get a hold of him but he has wifi unavailable so I send a regular text message (paying this time). I want to know how to setup iMessage so I can choose whether to send message using iMessage or regular international text. I need both options available so please guide me through.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4s)

Only send it to his email address that's registered for iMessage if it fails it won't revert to a text message!

I would go with messaging the email. That way it will still revert to SMS when your iMessage doesn't go through with your other contacts.
