I've heard some horror stories over how some iphone owners were not using their iphone to browse the internet on the 3g network yet somehow they were downloading data (programs running in the background?) and end up paying loads of money. True? How do I make sure I'm not using my data when I'm not browsing the internet on my iPhone?

*Programs can't run in the background* (except stock apps)

Perhaps they were using apps that required data and weren't connected to wifi. If you are using at&t with an iphone a data plan is required so you won't have to worry about it ;).

I think the 'horror' stories come from roaming charges when your out of the country.
