I have an iPhone 3G and I'm soon off to university, where I'm a bit worried their internet access is going to be a bit lacking. Since I'm already paying £45 a month to O2, it seems silly to get a separate 3G modem and pay the monthly contract.

I know it's possible to tether using wifi, but I'd rather be able to use the iPhone as a USB modem. Are there any jailbreak apps that will let me do it?

Cheers

This is not available right yet. Just put a password on the adhoc network when you make it and all will be secure. With our limitations on 3g there would be no difference sending the data over an adhoc or USB cable.

i for one would like to also use it as a USB modem so it'll charge the iPhone at the same time. is this possible already?

There's nothing preventing you from having the iPhone connected via USB to charge it while you are also using ad hoc for internet.
