iPhone Using iphone 4s Internationally

So, I'm going abroad for a few months next year, and I was just wondering what options I had as far as jailbreaking/unlocking. I know it's something that can be done, but I'm having trouble finding a definitive way to do it.

I'm running ios 6.0.1 on AT&T. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this a feasible thing to be trying to do to be able to use my iphone while abroad?

get an imei unlock from either AT&T it self or buy one online from a greymarket vendor, on ebay only a couple of $'s.

Are there any disadvantages to permanently unlocking the iphone? I would prefer (if possible) something that would was more temporary.

How could there be any disadvantages ?
Once IMEI unlocked, firmware and baseband changes are no longer a concern.
Re-sale value goes up.
You can use original carrier sim or any GSM sim.
There are no downsides.

If you are the type of people that can't choose what they want then the permanent disadvantage is that you can use any GSM carrier. It must be very difficult to decide which carrier to use.

Ah, I was just worried about voiding the warranty or something.

So an IMEI unlock could be done through AT&T if I bug them enough times? Does it matter that I'm still under their contract? (I remember reading that they would provide unlocks if you're out of contract with them). If this doesn't work, how reliable are those R-Sims 7s? I'm assuming once i get into the UK, i'd be able to find a prepaid sim card there.

AT&T will not unlock any phone which is in a contract unless you are in the military serving overseas.
Read the reviews of sim interposers - IMHO opinion spending $5 to get an IMEI unlock beats even 1 hour's worth of issues with a sim interposer. Besides, an AT&T iPhone can be IMEI unlocked for cheaper than a sim interposer.
