Hey,

This is my situation. I am a student who is very very unorganized and would love to finally have a device that syncs well with my mac. the iPhone was a great thing for my situation because its not only a phone but it will help me be organized because i can input homework assignments, meetings and other things i need to keep track of and then every night sync everything. I know the iPhone is locked untill activation, and im willing to pay a little (~$100) more to be able to use it sans service for now. What i want to do is buy the iPhone now (to play with) but not activate it with service (i know you wont be able to use anything thats why im posting for ideas) then come school year use it as my planner, ipod, and web broswer, then finally when my verizon contract is up in feb 08 just sign up for an iPhone plan and go from there. So if anyone has any ideas on how to do this, or any other way i can have a small planner (thats digital) that will sync with iCal let me know.

-Daniel

P.S. I tried to use a verizon PDA with Missing Sync for windows mobile, it was to buggy for me and failed to do anything 75% of the time, so thats out of the question.

what you want to do is, with all the knowledge we have now, absolutely impossible. all the features of the phone are completely disabled until activated by att through itunes. good luck, but it won't work. sorry

That will not work....If you look at the online register video you clearly have to pick a plan first....Thing will not work without activation...Sorry dude

Yea i know about the activation, what i was thiniking along the lines of. Activating, Canceling within 3 days, and then keeping the iPhone minus the $36 activation fee. Possible? Or will i also have to incur the $175 ETF?

In theory (and let me disclaim this right now by saying that this might not be possible) you could purchase the iPhone ($499), activate it ($36), wait a month ($60+taxes and fees), and pay the termination fee ($175) to use it just as a PDA/iPod, but it seems like it would make a lot more sense to just pay Verizon their $175 and get it as a new phone.

For $100 more, you're outta luck on this one. It's gonna be at minimum $200 extra. And $700 just for a PDA just is not worth it, period.

ETA: If you cancel before 30 days is up, you have to turn the phone back in. You don't get to keep it until after 30 days, and after you pay the termination fee.

Yea that math is pretty awful. I would get out of verizon but my girlfriend (the one whom i txt and call the most -- by far) will be on verizon untill march of 08. As a seperate question, if i were to get out of my plan now and switch to ATT is there some sort of plan where calling her would use zero mins even though she is on verizon (similar to alltels my circle). Or anyway i could basically make my ATT plan not incur a huge amount of charges even though she is on verizon.
