Using Memory in PC

I'm going to buy my first Mac soon. As I would like a notebook and have always wanted a Mac, but have never had the cash to get one... plus, being in school a PC was almost necessary at my college.


But because I don't really NEED a laptop, and it won't be used for anything TOO intense, I'm considering buying the base MacBook.

However, I want 2Gigs of RAM. I've read all about how you can use third party and it's just as good as spending the ridiculous amount apple charges... but I'm wondering... can I reuse the 512MB stick that comes in the MacBook? I have a PC that only has 512MB of RAM and I've just been putting off getting another one. Will this work?

macbook is laptop ram, 200 pin. I assume you are talking about a desktop pc, which uses larger ram. Unless you have a smaller computer like a mini or an imac, then no you can't.

Its yours to do what you want with it. The problem arises I think if the notebook has to be returned for repair and has the third party RAM in it, hence you are probably better of keeping the original RAM shipped with it to swap round in case you do need to send it in. Free for correction if Im wrong!!!

It all comes down to personal preference now.... do I wait to see if there's an upgrade for the MB? Or do I be greedy and get my free nano?

I'll at least wait until the very last minute.

Apple recognise that people will change their own RAM - there are no real warranty issues.

This has been discussed ad nauseum; You're right that 3rd party ram, as long as it falls in the designed specifications, will not void your warranty. However, there are numerous cases of bad apples (pardon the pun) that on seeing anything other than apple-sold ram in a machine will insist that this must be the cause. It may take a few calls and a bit of hassle that could have been avoided by just replacing the OEM equipment.

"Broken LCD panel? Well, it must be the Kingston RAM you stuck in there!"

I say wait, but not because of a MB update (probably not for a little while) but because there will most likely be updates to the iPod line on 9/5.

Yeah... but they make you pick from selected iPods... and if they DO update the iPod, that's probably the whole reason for giving away the old ones.

I doubt that you'll be able to get a free new nano.
