Using my external HD

I want to use my external HD with my Apple TV. I did a quick search on the internet, but the only articles I could find were published either late 2007 or early 2008. Now, obviously there have been software changes to the Apple TV since then, so before I spend time figuring out how it works, could someone confirm if the procedure still works for the newest Apple TV software.

I wasn't getting at you - it's not always easy to know exactly what to search for - I tried the same when I was looking to do the same to mine, and found a wealth of old info that wasn't relevant. I lucked out due to Matt's timely answer appearing and with one additional post, got exactly what I (and it appears you) needed in simple, easy steps!
