iPad Pro Using my MK as a dock?

Any downside to using the IPP MK as a dock, where it is kept open and the IPP popped on or off as needed? I am thinking of doing that to facilitate tablet mode.

Nope! No real downsides.

Tablet mode of course is easy to achieve, just disconnect any peripheral devices.

Only downside is the missing protection when using the tablet only. Which on the other hand is probably nice, I like my iPads caseless on the couch or when writing.
